By His Stripes – Why the Fulfillment Was Always Physical, Not Just Spiritual

I'm excited to keep going in this series, because today I want to settle something people argue about constantly — whether "by His stripes you were healed" is talking about your spirit or your body.

He Introduced Himself This Way on Purpose

When someone tells you who they are, they're telling you how they want to be seen. When God said, "I am the Lord who heals you," He wasn't handing out a title for the record books — He was telling His people exactly how He wanted to be known and approached.

That self-description didn't come with an expiration date attached. Healing was never a temporary character trait that showed up for thirty-three years and then quietly retired.

Forget Not All His Benefits – Forgiveness and Healing Were Never Separated

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases.”

Psalm 103:2-3 (NKJV)

This was written long before Jesus, long before the cross, long before there was a new covenant to argue about. David lists forgiveness of sin and healing of disease side by side, as two benefits of the same relationship — not one spiritual and one irrelevant, but both real, both promised, both meant to be remembered rather than forgotten.

Notice the warning built into that verse too — forget not. There's an implication that you could forget, or that someone could talk you out of remembering these that benefits actually belong to you.

Matthew Already Told You What "By His Stripes" Means

“When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: ‘He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.’”

Matthew 8:16-17 (NKJV)

This is the same passage that leads into 1 Peter 2:24's "by whose stripes you were healed." Matthew doesn't leave the interpretation open — he specifically connects Isaiah's prophecy to Jesus healing sick bodies, not merely forgiving sin. If the fulfillment of that prophecy was physical healing, the promise behind it was never only spiritual.

Forgiveness of sin and healing have always traveled together in Scripture. When Jesus told the paralyzed man, "Your sins are forgiven you," the next thing He said was, "Take up your bed and walk."

The Father who healed an entire nation of former slaves before anyone asked, who told David not to forget His benefits, who fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy in bodies, not just souls — that Father hasn't changed. He is still the Lord who heals you.
