Cast It Down Out Loud: Why Thinking It Away Never Works

Have you ever tried to just not think about something — and the harder you tried, the louder it got?

You told yourself you wouldn’t say it. You made up your mind to keep your mouth shut. But the thought kept pressing and pressing until finally it exploded right out of you. Today I want to show you why silence isn’t enough — and why the only way to cast down a thought is to open your mouth.

Your brain stops to listen when your mouth starts talking.

Let me give you a simple exercise. Count backward in your head from ten to one. Now say your name out loud.

Did you notice what happened? Your brain stopped counting to listen to what your mouth had to say. Your mind responds to your tongue.

That’s the key to everything I’m teaching you. When thoughts and imaginations are firing at your mind — fear, doubt, worry, temptation — you don’t defeat them by thinking harder. You defeat them by opening your mouth and speaking something different.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:4–5 NKJV

Notice what it says. Casting down. That’s active. That’s aggressive. That’s not sitting quietly hoping the thought goes away. That’s opening your mouth and telling that thought where to go — the same way Jesus opened His mouth on the mountain and said, “It is written.”

I did this in the middle of Walmart — and my girlfriend thought I’d lost my mind.

Early in my relationship with Terry — before we were married — I was under an extreme amount of pressure. People were trying to destroy the ministry. My former spouse and the man she left with were calling everyone they could find, spreading lies. A guy literally showed up at my office and told my staff he was being paid to take me down. I was about to lose our building.

Terry and I were at Walmart, and those thoughts just would not stop. “You’re going to lose everything. Look at what people are saying about you.” It was stealing my joy, stealing my peace, and crushing me.

Right in the middle of the store, I stopped. Raised my hands. And said out loud:

“Father, I just want to thank You that You supply all of my need according to Your riches in glory. I thank You, Lord, that everything stolen is being restored. I don’t care what people think about me. I care only what You think about me. I refuse to be moved by this. I have not gone to war at my own expense. My peace and my joy are found in You.”

Terry looked at me like I’d lost my mind. She said, “What are these people going to think?”

I said, “What do I care what these people think? It’s not their life. It’s mine. It’s not their head. It’s mine.”

And after I did it? I had peace. The pressure lifted. Not because the circumstances changed — but because I pulled the bridle, cast down the thoughts, and replaced them with the Word of God. I made God bigger than my problem.

It’s not enough to not say something. You have to say something.

This is where the word police get people into trouble. They tell you, “Don’t say that. Don’t confess that. Watch your mouth.” And there’s truth in that. But if all you do is shut your mouth while the wrong thing is still running in your head, eventually it’s coming out.

David learned this the hard way.

I said, “I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle.” I was mute with silence, I held my peace even from good; and my sorrow was stirred up. My heart was hot within me; while I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue.

Psalm 39:1–3 NKJV

He did everything right at first. Guarded his mouth. Put a muzzle on it. Stayed silent. But notice what happened — he held his peace even from good. He wasn’t saying the wrong thing, but he also wasn’t saying the right thing. And while he sat there musing, the fire burned hotter and hotter until it blew out of his mouth.

Silence is not the solution. Replacement is.

If you don’t change what the tongue is hooked to, you’ll never change what comes out.

Let me put this another way. If Jeff walked around saying, “I’m a loser,” and I told him, “Don’t say that” — he might stop saying it to please me. But if he still believes it on the inside, the moment pressure shows up, it’s coming right back out of his mouth.

The only way to permanently change what comes out is to change what’s on the inside. And the way you change the inside is by putting the Word in your mouth — out loud, over and over — until it gets down into your heart and replaces the lie.

If I can get Jeff to see that he is the righteousness of God in Christ, that he’s been given the victory through the Lord Jesus, that his labor is not in vain — he’ll quit calling himself a loser automatically. Not because I policed his words, but because the truth displaced the lie on the inside.

I use this every single day — in finances, health, and marriage.

Right now, our ministry is believing God for $250,000 for a major project. And the thoughts fire at me constantly — “It’s not going to happen. You can’t afford this.” What do I do? I open my mouth. “I will not be deceived. God is not mocked. Whatsoever I have sown, I will also reap.”

When I cracked my L4 and L5 vertebrae and pain hit me every time I moved, my mind screamed, “You’re going to deal with this for the rest of your life.” What did I do? I opened my mouth. “By His stripes I was healed. Back, you listen to me — you be made whole in Jesus’ name.”

When frustration rises up in my marriage and everything in me wants to criticize Terry, what do I do? I don’t just hold it in. I replace it. “Baby, I want you to know I love you.”

Every single time, the weapon is the same. Open your mouth. Cast down the thought. Replace it with truth.

The fire only burns when you’re musing in silence.

David’s problem wasn’t his anger. It was his silence. He muzzled his mouth but left his mind running — and the fire got hotter until it burned right through the muzzle.

That’s what happens when you try to think it away. You can’t out-think a thought. But you can out-speak it. Your brain will stop and listen every time your mouth opens. So give it something worth hearing.

Don’t muse. Don’t sit in silence hoping the pressure passes. Don’t try to win the battle in your head.

Open your mouth. Cast it down. Speak the Word. Fight To Win.
