Every Time You Think Bigger, He Already Has Something Better

Every Time You Think Bigger, He Already Has Something Better

Let me ask you something. When you pray about your mortgage, what are you actually expecting? That He'll cover this month's payment? Or that He'll cover ten payments — and then have something left over to pour into someone else's situation?

That might sound excessive. Good. That's the point.

We've been building a case over the last several messages — from creation, from Psalm 23, from the feeding of 4,000, from Peter's two sinking boats, from Luke 6:38 — that God is not a just-enough God. He's a run-over God. And today I want to show you one more piece of this that pulls it all together.

He didn't do miracles to prove He was God — He did them to show you the Father.

I want to deal with something that gets said a lot in religious circles: that Jesus performed miracles to prove He was God. I'm going to be honest with you — that doesn't hold up.

If the miracles were meant to prove His deity, why didn't the Pharisees bow down? Why didn't the Sadducees? Why didn't the kings and princes of the day fall at His feet and say, "Truly, You are Lord"? He didn't prove it to them. In His own hometown, He couldn't do any mighty work at all — and they nearly killed Him on the way out.

Here's what He was actually doing: He was showing people the Father. Every healing, every provision, every excess — it was Him saying, "This is what the Kingdom of God is like. This is what your Father is like. This is how He moves."

He wasn't proving His deity. He was revealing His Father's heart. And that heart has not changed.

The pattern is the same every time — excessive, overflowing, more than enough.

Let's look at the pattern across Scripture, because doctrine needs more than one witness.

Creation: God made food for you that had to be good-looking as well as nutritious. Not just sustaining — enjoyable.

Psalm 23: your cup doesn't just fill up. It runs over. He keeps pouring after it's full.

The feeding of 4,000 in Mark 8: they hadn't eaten in three days. Jesus filled every one of them to the point they couldn't eat anymore — and then sent them home with seven large baskets of leftovers. Seven baskets big enough to hold a man, after 4,000 people were already full.

Peter's catch in Luke 5: one man sowed one boat. He reaped two boatloads of fish — so many that both boats started to sink.

And now Luke 6:38: give and it will be given to you — good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over. He's not satisfied until it spills past the rim.

This is not a coincidence. This is a character trait. He is the run-over God. And He wants to run over in your life.

"Exceedingly and abundantly above all you can ask or think" — that's a sliding scale.

Now here's where it gets really powerful. Ephesians 3:20:

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.

Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

People read that and say, "Yeah, but He doesn't." And the reason is often in the second half of the verse — "according to the power that works in us." If we limit Him with a small picture of who He is, the power gets limited too.

But here's what I want you to see about the first half: "exceedingly and abundantly above all you can ask or think" is a sliding scale.

Today He does something for you that staggers you. Something you never imagined. And now — because you've seen it — you can ask for it. You can think it. So tomorrow He does better than that. And the day after that, better still. Because every time the bar moves to where you can ask or think it, He's already moving past it.

Why would He do this? Because He is in love with you. And every single time He's good to you, He's already thinking, "I've got something bigger coming."

You limit Him when you don't see Him as He is.

Here's the problem. People limit God — not because He is unwilling, but because they don't see Him as an excessive God. They settle for pain relief when healing is available. They settle for this month's mortgage payment when He's ready to overflow.

Someone says, "You don't understand. I have cancer." Let me tell you something — God can recreate every cell in your body. Please don't tell me cancer is nothing to Jesus. The issue is not His ability or His willingness. The issue is whether you'll allow His power to work in you at that level.

The power that works in you is directly tied to how much you believe He loves you and wants to do this for you. The more you see Him as He truly is — excessive, run-over, abundantly above all you can ask or think — the more room you give Him to move.

You don't limit Him by your sin. You limit Him by your small picture of His love.

If you were in a romantic comedy with Jesus — He'd fill the house with roses.

I want you to think about this for a second. If God were courting you — if this were a romantic comedy — you'd walk into your house one day and there'd be $25,000 worth of roses everywhere. Every surface covered. Every room full. Completely excessive, completely over the top.

That's the level at which He wants to pour into your life. He's not trying to hand you a single stem and call it love. He wants the whole house full.

People say that's excessive. Yes. It absolutely is. A cup that runs over is excessive. Two sinking boats are excessive. Four thousand people eating until they're full and seven large baskets left over — that's excessive. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, and running over — that's excessive.

But that's exactly who He is. And He's in love with you. People do crazy things when they're in love. And God is no exception.

Start expecting more — and then expect more than that.

Here's the practical word I want to leave you with. Start expecting more from God than you've been expecting. Not just this month's bill paid — ten months. Not just healing from pain — total restoration of strength and vitality. Not just your boat filled — your partner's boat filled too.

And when He does more than you thought possible, raise the bar. Because He's already past it. Exceedingly and abundantly above all you can ask or think is not a ceiling — it's a floor that rises with you every time He moves.

The way you see Him is the way you'll receive from Him. Start seeing a God who is in love with you and is excessive about it. Start expecting a run-over God. Start praying with the knowledge that when you ask for the mortgage payment, He's already thinking about how many mortgage payments He's going to cover — and whose else besides yours.

This is who He is. This is who He wants to be to you. The only question is whether you'll let Him.

Allow the Word to persuade you. Feed on these Scriptures until the picture changes — until the just-enough God you may have been raised with gets replaced by the excessive, run-over, exceedingly-and-abundantly-above-all-you-can-ask-or-think God that Scripture actually reveals.

He wants to do better for you than your best day. And He's ready to start right now.
