Jesus wants to talk to you. Jesus wants a relationship with you, which is why He came to earth and died for you. Jesus didn’t come to die for your coat.

De-Cloaking Your Coat

Think of the last time someone left the room but told you to keep the conversation going with the coat that had been taken off. They haven’t. We would find that absurd. People don’t converse with coverings or shells; they have conversations with other people.

Unfortunately, that’s what many of us do when we’re talking about Jesus. We give Him our coat; our shell, our body. God doesn’t want to talk to your coat. He wants to have a conversation with the real you — the spirit put inside your coat through Jesus’ life and death on the cross.

Many Christians, though, mistake hearing with their coat for an accurate ability to hear from God. They want to see, touch and hear signs. Jesus called these people the adulterous generation because they sought external, flesh-led signs. Someone who needs an external indicator to understand what God is saying is someone led by the flesh, not by the Spirit.

Who are the Children of God?

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God,” Paul wrote in Romans 8:14.

Everyone can be a child of God, but not everyone will. Only those who are led by the Spirit of God are those considered children of God. The sons of God Paul writes about in this verse are more than the adopted children of God.

Paul writes about children who look like their dad. These are people who reflect the characteristics of the Father. The characteristics, though, aren’t just a physical resemblance — they are internal changes that make someone act and respond like the Father.

Paul goes on to tell us that we can be identified as God’s children through our spirits because the Spirit bears witness to our spirits. God’s Spirit is what allows us to call God our Father and is what recognizes the inward characteristics that make us His sons.

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:15-16

Embrace Your Spirit

I bet if I asked how you were feeling, you wouldn’t have to stop to pray. This is because you’re in touch with your body’s feelings. How would you answer, though, if I asked how you were feeling spiritually?

The majority of people aren’t as focused on their spiritual selves and don’t live with that as the center of their reality. We’re too focused on our coats to think about what’s inside when what is inside the coat is what will truly matter in thousands or billions of years.

The reality is, the more you become conscious of your spirit on the inside, the better you can hear from God. I’m still alive without my coat. So are you. Hang yours up and start letting the person inside the coat talk to God — your hearing from Jesus will be much more accurate.
