God Has a Fail-Safe: How Integrity Protects You Even When You Miss It
Are you afraid to step out and follow God’s leading because you might make a mistake?
You’ve been paralyzed. You feel something stirring on the inside, but the fear of getting it wrong keeps you frozen. “What if I miss it? What if I ruin my life? What if it’s not really God?” Today I want to put that fear to rest. Because God has a built-in protective mechanism — and once you understand it, you’ll never be afraid to move again.
You are going to make mistakes. That’s not the end of the story.
Let’s be honest. I’ve been teaching you for weeks now about how to hear from God. You’ve learned about wanting it, dropping the bucket, getting sensitive, shifting to neutral, and not outsourcing your hearing. But even with all of that — you are still going to bump your head a few times.
That’s okay. Because God has a fail-safe.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 8:14 NKJV
He didn’t say “for as many as perfectly execute every leading.” He said “as many as are led.” There’s grace built into the process. And what I’m about to show you is the protection that covers you while you’re learning.
A man with no relationship got protected because of his integrity.
Go with me to Genesis 20. Abraham has lied about his wife Sarah — again. He told King Abimelech, “She’s my sister.” So Abimelech takes Sarah into his house, not knowing she’s another man’s wife.
Now watch what happens.
God shows up to Abimelech in a dream and says, “You’re a dead man. She’s married.”
Lord, will You slay a righteous nation also? Did he not say to me, “She is my sister”?... In the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands I have done this.
Genesis 20:4–5 NKJV
And God’s response is stunning:
Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.
Genesis 20:6 NKJV
God protected a man who had no covenant, no relationship, and no born-again spirit — because he was acting in the integrity of his heart and the innocence of his hands.
Now let that sink in. If God will do that for a pagan king who didn’t even know Him, how much more will He do it for you — His own child, born of His Spirit, in covenant relationship with Him?
This is the fail-safe for hearing from God.
Here’s the principle. As long as you are operating in the integrity of your heart and the innocence of your hands — honestly believing that what you’re doing is what God told you to do — even if you get it wrong, He will protect you and redirect you.
That’s not a license to be reckless. That’s a safety net for sons and daughters who are genuinely trying to follow their Father.
Can you imagine being able to look Jesus in the eye and say, “Sir, with every fiber of my being, I honestly believed this is what You were telling me to do.” If you can say that — even if you missed it — He’s got you. He’ll protect you. He’ll course-correct you. He’ll get you back on the right path.
That should shut down every fear of “What if I make a mistake?”
But the fail-safe only works if you’re honest with yourself.
Now here’s where I have to get in your face a little — and mine.
The protection is for people who are genuinely operating in integrity. It doesn’t cover you when you’re manufacturing a leading to get what you want.
I’ve done it. I’ve sat there wanting something to be God so badly that I didn’t even bother asking Him whether it was. I’d look at the circumstances and say, “Look at how everything’s falling into place. This must be God.” Did I actually ask Him? No. I was afraid He’d say no.
That is not the integrity of your heart and the innocence of your hands. That’s manipulation dressed up in spiritual language.
You start dating someone and fall in love, then you pray about it — hoping God will just rubber-stamp what you’ve already decided. You get pitched a business deal and your mouth is watering at the money, and only now are you asking God — but you’ve already made up your mind. Someone wrongs you and you convince yourself God has given you permission to attack them.
None of that is integrity. And the fail-safe doesn’t cover it.
I checked on the relationship before I fell in love.
When I met my wife, I didn’t date her first and ask God later. Before our first real date, I realized she was someone I could fall in love with. But she was Catholic, and I wasn’t sure she was born again.
So I called her and told her straight. “I think you’re someone I could fall in love with, but your denomination believes I’m going to hell, and I’m not.”
She said, “Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior?”
I said yes.
She said, “Then it doesn’t matter what my denomination believes. The Bible says you’re going to heaven.”
Okay. We can have lunch.
But I was perfectly willing to walk away. Because I was not going to get so deep into a relationship that I’d have to manufacture a leading just to justify staying in it. I checked before my heart was on the line — not after. That’s the integrity of your heart and the innocence of your hands.
Don’t manufacture a leading. Don’t skip the asking.
If it violates the Word of God, you cannot claim integrity. If you never actually asked Him, you cannot claim innocence. If you’re only praying about it after you’re already neck-deep, the fail-safe doesn’t apply the same way.
The protection kicks in when you genuinely seek Him, genuinely shift to neutral, genuinely will to do His will — and then step out in honest faith believing you heard Him.
And when you miss it? Don’t condemn yourself. Get back up. He’ll teach you. He’ll let you know, “That wasn’t Me.” And you’ll learn. You’ll develop more intimacy. You’ll build track record. And over time, hearing Him will become second nature.
Step out. He’s got you.
Quit being paralyzed by fear of mistakes. Make up your mind right now that whatever you do, you’ll do it in the integrity of your heart and the innocence of your hands. You will honestly seek Him. You will honestly obey what you believe He’s saying. And if you get it wrong, your Father will catch you.
Operate in integrity. Trust the fail-safe. Fight To Win.
