Grab the Bridle: How Your Tongue Can Turn Your Whole Life Around
Have you ever had something you desperately wanted to stop doing — and no matter how hard you prayed, you just couldn’t shake it?
Maybe it’s fear. Maybe it’s anger. Maybe it’s a habit that’s had its hooks in you for years. You’ve prayed about it. You’ve cried about it. You’ve promised God you’d change. But your flesh keeps winning. Today I want to show you a tool you probably haven’t been using — and it’s been in your mouth the whole time.
Your tongue is a bridle for your body and a rudder for your life.
James, the brother of Jesus, said something that should stop every believer in their tracks.
For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
James 3:2 NKJV
Did you catch that? The person who gets control of their tongue is able to bridle their whole body. Not part of it. The whole thing.
Then he drives it home with two illustrations.
Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.
James 3:3–5 NKJV
Your tongue is the bit in the horse’s mouth. Your tongue is the rudder on the ship. It’s small. It seems insignificant. But it turns the whole thing.
If that’s true — and James says it is — then I don’t understand why people don’t want to talk about this. Your tongue can bridle your body and steer your life. That seems like something worth getting a hold of.
Jesus didn’t just “soldier on” — He opened His mouth.
People think victory over temptation is about gritting your teeth, sucking it up, and pushing through. That’s not what Jesus did.
After forty days of fasting, His body was screaming for food. Scientists say that’s the point where your body starts feeding on itself — the hunger of death. And right at that moment, the devil shows up and wants to talk about bread.
Did Jesus lift His chin, bravely ignore it, and walk on? No. He opened His mouth.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
He wasn’t just rebuking the devil. He was bridling His own flesh. He was pulling on the bit. He was reminding His body, “This is not how we live.”
James grew up watching Jesus do this.
Think about that for a second. James lived in the same house as Jesus. He watched Him handle temptation, pressure, opposition, and every kind of challenge — and what he came away with was this: if you’re going to walk this walk, you’ve got to get control of your tongue.
This wasn’t theory for James. He watched the sinless Son of God use His words to bridle His flesh in real time. And now he’s telling us — the tongue is the bit. The tongue is the rudder. Learn to use it.
I still have to pull the bridle every single day.
Let me be transparent with you. I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and I still have challenging days.
Right now, our ministry is facing a financial crunch. We emptied our bank account this morning paying bills. We’ve been spending $1,500 to $2,000 a week helping a church whose pastor had a heart attack. That wasn’t in the budget. And the thoughts keep ringing in my ears — “You’re not going to have the money. You’re going to have to go off television. You can’t take care of your people.”
You don’t think that talks to my head? You don’t think my flesh wants to say out loud, “We just don’t have enough”?
So what do I do? I pull the bridle.
“I will not be deceived. God is not mocked. Whatsoever I have sown, I will also reap. My God shall supply all of my need according to His riches in glory. I have not gone to war at my own expense.”
Am I saying it because I feel it? No. I’m saying it because if I don’t say it, the other thing is going to come out. That’s how the bridle works. You don’t just stop saying the wrong thing — you replace it with the right thing. If your mouth is busy declaring truth, there’s no room for the fear, the doubt, or the defeat to come pouring out.
Don’t just shut your mouth — open it with the right words.
This is where the word police get it wrong. They tell you, “Don’t say that. Don’t say that. Don’t say that.” And there’s truth to that. But if all you do is close your mouth, eventually the pressure builds and the wrong words explode out anyway.
You have to say something. You have to pull the bridle in the other direction. You have to speak what the Word says over your situation — out loud — so your flesh hears it and your mind gets turned.
When everything in me is screaming, “This just isn’t my day,” I have to intentionally open my mouth and say, “Oh, this IS my day.” Not because I’m in denial. Because I’m pulling the bridle. I’m turning the ship. I’m refusing to let my flesh steer me into the rocks.
Grace teaches you to deny ungodliness — and your tongue is how you cooperate.
Now, some of you are thinking, “But I thought it was all up to God. I thought grace handles everything.”
I’m a grace preacher. I believe in the grace of God with everything in me. But grace teaches you to deny ungodliness — that’s what the Bible says. And one of the primary ways you cooperate with grace is through your tongue.
Grace isn’t a license to let your mouth run wild and expect God to clean up after you. Grace is the power of God working in you — and your tongue is how you partner with that power.
If you’ve been praying for years to stop doing something and it hasn’t stopped, let me ask you a question. Have you been pulling the bridle? Have you been speaking to your flesh out loud? Or have you just been praying and hoping God would override your mouth for you?
He gave you the bridle. It’s time to use it.
Pull the bridle. Turn the ship. Navigate to your destiny.
Your tongue is small. But it turns everything. Your body. Your mind. Your fears. Your future.
Quit letting your flesh steer. Quit waiting for the temptation to just go away on its own. Open your mouth, pull the bridle, and start speaking the Word of God over every area of your life that’s been running wild.
Grab the bridle. Turn the ship. Fight To Win.
