Judge Everything by the Word: Your Bible Is the Ultimate Safety Mechanism
How do you know for certain whether what you’re hearing is God or the enemy?
You’ve had thoughts come out of nowhere. You’ve sensed leadings you weren’t sure about. Maybe someone gave you a “word from God” that felt right but ended up wrong. If you’ve ever been confused about whether something was truly from God, today I’m giving you the one tool that will never fail you — and it’s probably already sitting on your nightstand.
The devil can imitate every way God speaks — except one.
We’ve been going through the ways God speaks, from the least common to the most common. Audible voice. Angels. Visions. Dreams. Through people. The inward voice.
Here’s what you need to understand about every single one of those: the enemy can replicate all of them.
People say, “How can the devil replicate the inward voice?” Have you ever had a thought just appear in your mind — something so out of character you wondered where it came from? That wasn’t you. That was the prince of the power of the air firing thoughts at your mind. That’s why Scripture tells us to cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. Not every thought in your head is yours.
If the enemy can imitate audible voices, manufacture feelings, counterfeit visions, and fire thoughts into your mind that sound like the inward voice — you need a measuring stick that he can’t fake.
That measuring stick is the written Word of God.
I watched a whole prayer group get deceived by “confirmations.”
Let me tell you a story that still bothers me. Years ago, a prayer group at a church led by a family member of mine had a woman who started developing what looked like a baby bump. She was older. Her husband was older. It didn’t make natural sense.
They’d pray until somebody “heard” something by the inward voice, and then they’d share it. Somebody said, “She’s pregnant.” Everybody got excited. Then the confirmations started rolling in. By the time it was done, eight or nine people had “confirmed” by the inward voice that this woman was pregnant.
One day I was driving with that family member and she said, “Isn’t it exciting that Joyce is going to have a baby?”
I turned to her and said, “What’s exciting is that Joyce is redeemed from cancer, and that cancer must wither and die in Jesus’ name.”
She turned white. She called Joyce immediately. Joyce went to the doctor. They found a tumor — but it was already disappearing. Thank God for that. But how did eight or nine Spirit-filled believers all get “confirmation” on something that wasn’t God?
Because the devil practiced. He got that prayer group used to demanding they hear an inward voice, and they stopped checking what they heard against anything solid. Later, that same family member heard an “inward voice” telling her to leave her husband and pursue another man. And it was all “confirmed.”
That’s what happens when you don’t have a measuring stick.
The Word of God is the judge of everything you hear.
Jesus Himself showed us how to handle this. When He walked into His hometown synagogue, He didn’t just announce who He was. He opened the book of Isaiah and showed them from Scripture.
When the devil tempted Him in the wilderness, Jesus didn’t rebuke him with feelings. He didn’t cite a vision. He didn’t reference an angelic visitation. He said, “It is written.”
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Matthew 4:4 NKJV
If the Son of the living God — standing face to face with the enemy — reached for the written Word, what makes us think we can skip it?
Yet I’ve met people who say, “God and I are so close, I don’t need the Bible anymore.” I had a woman tell me, “God told me not to read the Bible for the next 30 days.”
No, He didn’t. The devil is trying to separate you from your measuring stick because once the measuring stick is gone, he can tell you anything and you’ll believe it.
His Word is His will. Period.
Here’s how this works practically.
Whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and My mother.
Mark 3:35 NKJV
In another passage, Jesus said those who hear the Word of God and do it are His family. What do we get from that? His Word is His will. They’re the same thing.
So when you hear something — from any source — you judge it against the written Word.
If someone tells you God said to leave your spouse, you don’t need to pray about it for thirty days. It’s already written: “You shall not commit adultery.” Done. That voice wasn’t God.
I like to call this the general will of God. There are things I never have to pray about because they’re already written. Is it God’s will to heal? Yes — “by His stripes you were healed.” Is lying wrong? I don’t need a prayer meeting for that. Should I forgive? Already settled. The Word covers it.
The devil will even quote Scripture — so know it for yourself.
Here’s where it gets sneaky. In the wilderness temptation, the devil actually quoted Scripture to Jesus. He twisted it. He took it out of context. He used the Word of God to try to get the Son of God into error.
But Jesus knew the Word for Himself. He didn’t panic. He didn’t get confused. He simply answered, “It is written again.” He knew the full context, and the enemy’s twist didn’t work.
That’s why you can’t just hear the Word secondhand. You have to read it for yourself. Read it over and over until it gets down inside of you. Because the enemy will try to use half-verses and out-of-context passages to lead you astray, and if you don’t know the full truth, you won’t catch it.
Your Bible is your safety net for every voice you’ll ever hear.
If you hear an audible voice, open your Bible and check it. If an angel appears, do what Paul said — if even an angel preaches another gospel, let him be accursed. If you have a vision, a dream, an inward voice, or a man speaks to you — it will never contradict the written Word of God. Never.
This is your safety mechanism. This is the judge of every leading, every impression, every prophecy, and every feeling. Pick it up. Read it. Study it. Get it inside you. And when something comes at you that doesn’t line up, you’ll know it instantly — because you’ll know what’s written.
Get in the Word. Judge everything by it. Fight To Win.
