One Word Held Peter Up — Until He Looked at the Wind
I'm excited to keep going in this series, because today I want to show you a moment where a word from God had already worked a miracle — and then got choked out anyway.
The Word isn't just advice — it's what created everything.
When you ask God for help, He's going to answer you with His Word. People get frustrated by that — "I just need money, and all He gave me was a Scripture" — but that Scripture is the seed to the money. That promise is the seed to the healing.
John 1 tells us that all things were made through the Word, and without it nothing was made that was made. When God hands you His Word, He's handing you the very thing that created everything that exists.
If it made everything, it can fix everything. That's why the sower sows the Word instead of just handing you the outcome directly.
Peter dictated the terms, and Jesus said, "Come"
The disciples were out on a boat, rowing against a contrary wind, completely stalled, when they saw Jesus walking toward them on the water in the darkest part of the night. They panicked, thought it was a ghost, and cried out in fear.
Jesus called back to them: "Be of good cheer, it is I, do not be afraid."
“Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
Matthew 14:28 (NKJV)
Think about what Peter had actually learned about Jesus in that moment — that whatever Jesus says carries enough power to suspend the laws of physics. One word from Him is enough to hold a man on top of the sea.
Jesus didn't argue with him or tell him to sit back down. He simply said, "Come." One word — not a book full of promises. One word, and Peter put his life on it.
Nothing about the storm changed. Something changed in Peter.
“So He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.”
Matthew 14:29 (NKJV)
Here's what's worth noticing — the wind that had the boat stalled out in the first place was still blowing exactly as hard while Peter stood on the water as it had been while he was sitting in the boat. Nothing about the outward circumstances changed between the moment he was rowing against the wind and the moment he stepped out onto it.
What changed was Peter. He heard the Word, he understood enough of it to act, and he endured past the moment of temptation to stay in the boat.
The Word had been sown, and for a few steps, it produced exactly what it promised.
One look at the wind was enough to choke it out.
“But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’”
Matthew 14:30 (NKJV)
The wind didn't get worse. Peter just started looking at it instead of the One who had spoken the Word that was holding him up. That one shift in focus was enough to let fear choke out a miracle that was already in progress.
That should tell you something important: even a word from God that has already begun to bear fruit in your life can still be choked out if you let the cares in front of you take more of your attention than the Word that's holding you up. It's not enough to receive the Word and act on it once. You have to keep your eyes on what He said, not on the wind that's still blowing around you.
Fight To Win.
