Seize the Rudder: Your Tongue Can Change the Direction of Your Life

Have you ever looked at your life and thought, “How did I end up here?”

Maybe you’re not where you planned to be. Maybe the winds of circumstance have been pushing you around for years — the economy, your job, your relationships, your past. And you’ve been standing on the deck of your own ship wondering why nothing is going in the direction you want. Today I’m going to show you why — and put the answer right in your hands.

Your life is a ship. Your tongue is the rudder. You are the pilot.

James said something that should change the way you see your entire life.

Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.

James 3:4–5 NKJV

Your tongue is not just a bridle for your flesh — which is what we spent last week on. It’s also a rudder for your life. And a rudder does one thing: it changes direction.

Now, some of you are already pushing back. “My tongue can’t change my life. You don’t understand my circumstances.” Let me show you what you’re actually saying.

When you say, “My life is too big for my tongue to change” — James already addressed that. “Although they are so large.” Yes. The ship is huge. He knows.

When you say, “It’s not my fault — it’s the economy, my boss, my family, my past” — James addressed that too. “Driven by fierce winds.” Yes. The winds are real. He’s not denying them.

But the rudder still turns the ship. Regardless of the size. Regardless of the winds. Wherever the pilot desires.

And the pilot? That’s you.

God is the Navigator, but you are the pilot.

People used to say, “God is my co-pilot.” Then religion corrected that and said, “No, let God be the pilot.”

Here’s the truth. God is not going to steer your life for you. He’ll navigate — He’ll tell you which way to go. But you have to turn the rudder. You are the pilot. Where your life goes is determined by what you do with the rudder He gave you.

That’s not a popular thing to say. People want to blame their circumstances, their upbringing, their background, or even God Himself for where they’ve ended up. But James doesn’t leave room for that. The pilot determines direction. The rudder is the tongue. And the ship goes wherever the pilot desires.

If you take your hand off the rudder, you still end up somewhere — just not somewhere good.

Here’s something most people don’t think about. You don’t have to actively steer your life into the rocks for it to fall apart. You just have to let go of the rudder.

In Florida, during the housing crash, thousands of homes were built and never occupied. Nobody ever set foot in them. And without a single person doing a single thing to them, they began to deteriorate. Roofs sagged. Mold grew. Walls cracked. Nobody had to destroy them. The curse of entropy did it all by itself.

Your life works the same way. If you don’t grab the rudder, your ship doesn’t sit still — it drifts. And drifting always leads to deterioration. Your health drifts. Your finances drift. Your relationships drift. Your purpose drifts.

You don’t have to curse your life with your mouth for it to go sideways. You just have to stop speaking life over it and let entropy do its work.

“I haven’t said anything bad” is not the same as steering.

A lot of people tell me, “I haven’t said anything negative.” Great. But have you said anything at all?

Not saying the wrong thing is the bridle — and that’s important. But the rudder requires you to actively speak direction over your life. You have to put your hand on it and turn it toward a destination.

That means opening your mouth and declaring where you’re going. Not just avoiding the negative — but aggressively speaking the positive. The Word of God over your health. The promises of God over your finances. The truth of God over your identity. The will of God over your future.

A rudder that nobody touches doesn’t keep the ship safe. It just lets the ship wander until it hits something.

Stop imagining what other people think about you.

Before we go deeper into the rudder this week, let me leave you with one more thing about the bridle — because this one destroys more people than almost anything else.

Many of you are in misery because you spend your whole life imagining what other people are thinking about you. You look at someone’s face and you decide, “They’re angry with me. They don’t like me. They think I’m stupid.”

But you don’t actually know any of that. You’ve engaged in what the Bible calls vain imaginations. You put thoughts into their head that they never had. And then you get angry at them for thoughts you invented.

When those thoughts fire at you — “They don’t like you. They’re talking about you. They think you’re a fraud” — pull the bridle. Open your mouth and say, “No. I refuse to think on that. I’m going to believe the best. I refuse to live in a made-up world.”

That alone will end more misery in your life than you can imagine.

The closer you get to your destination, the tighter you hold the rudder.

Here’s something I’ve watched happen over and over. People are believing God for something. They’re headed toward their breakthrough. They can almost see the port. And right at that moment — when they’re closest to their destination — all hell breaks loose.

The winds pick up. The waves get bigger. And right when they need the rudder most, they let go. “This isn’t working. It’s never going to happen for me.”

Do you realize what you just did? You grabbed the rudder and pointed it straight at the rocks — right when you were about to pull into port.

The closer you get to your destiny, the more control you need over your tongue. Don’t let go when you’re almost there. Tighten your grip. Speak louder. Declare harder. The port is right in front of you.

Seize the rudder. Set your course. Navigate to your destiny.

Your life is not at the mercy of the wind. You have a rudder. It’s small, but it turns everything. Grab it. Speak direction. Declare where you’re going. And don’t let go until you get there.

Seize the rudder. Set your course. Fight To Win.
