Stop Arguing With Overwatch: Your Carnal Mind Is Robbing You of God’s Protection

Have you ever had a strong impression from the Lord to do something — and talked yourself out of it because it didn’t make sense?

You felt it. You knew something was stirring on the inside of you. But then your mind kicked in. “Why would God ask me to do that? That doesn’t make sense. That can’t be God.” And you reasoned your way right out of His leading. Today I want to show you how dangerous that is — and why your carnal mind might be the single biggest obstacle between you and hearing God clearly.

Your mind is going to fight you on this.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

Romans 8:6–7 NKJV

That’s a strong word. Your carnal mind isn’t just unhelpful in hearing God — it’s an enemy of God. It will actively resist the things of the Spirit every single time.

Am I saying don’t think? No. Am I saying have a Christian lobotomy? Absolutely not. But I am saying this — there are going to be many times when God asks you to do something that is completely illogical to the natural mind.

Was it logical to walk on water? Was it logical to raise a stick over the Red Sea? Was it logical to pull tax money out of a fish’s mouth? Was it logical to rub dirt on a blind man’s eyes?

If you demand that every leading from God makes sense to your natural mind before you’ll obey, you’re going to miss Him. A lot.

A woman broke her ribs because someone reasoned away a leading.

Let me tell you a story. A pastor’s wife was in a service. Worship was going strong. She looked over and saw an elderly woman in her 80s dancing. On the inside, the Lord said, “Go hold her hands and dance with her.”

The pastor’s wife started reasoning. “Why would God want me to do that? That doesn’t make sense. Why would He care about that?”

While she sat there arguing with the leading, the woman tripped, hit a chair, and broke several ribs. The service was interrupted by an ambulance.

God was trying to protect that woman through a simple act of obedience. But the pastor’s wife let her carnal mind override the Spirit — because it didn’t make sense.

A man died because two people couldn’t stop reasoning.

Here’s a harder one. A man was planning a motorcycle trip to Wyoming to see his brother. He started going around his church telling people, “I don’t know why, but something in me keeps saying I shouldn’t go. Pray for me.”

But then his mind jumped in. “Why wouldn’t God want me to see my brother? That doesn’t make sense. That can’t be God.” So he went.

At a McDonald’s in Wyoming, a born-again, Spirit-filled woman looked at him and felt the Lord tell her to go over and talk to him. But she started reasoning too. “What would I even say to two bikers? Why would God ask me to do that?”

She didn’t go. They left. Fifteen minutes later, a truck jackknifed across the road and killed him on his motorcycle.

Two people. Two leadings. Two carnal minds that demanded it make sense first. One set of broken ribs and one dead man.

You don’t argue with Overwatch.

Let me put this in terms I understand. In tactical operations, overwatch means someone positioned higher than you who can see more of the battlefield than you can. They have a wider view. They can see threats you can’t.

You never argue with overwatch. They say go left, you go left. They say stop, you stop. They can see what you can’t see.

God is your Overwatch. He can see out ahead of you, behind you, around every corner. When He says “Pull over,” He’s not testing you — He’s seeing something you can’t. When He says “Don’t go on that trip,” He’s not being controlling — He’s protecting your life.

It would be insane for the guy on the ground to argue with the guy watching all the cameras. “I think I should go left.” No, darlin’. He can see the whole building. You can see the hallway. Shut up and follow the instructions.

When you obey and nothing dramatic happens, that’s the whole point.

Here’s the part nobody talks about. What if the pastor’s wife had just obeyed? She walks over, grabs the woman’s hands, they dance together, the music stops, she goes back to her seat. Nothing dramatic happens.

No LED screen drops from the ceiling saying, “Good job, kid. You just saved that woman from broken ribs.” No angel appears. No thunderclap. You just go home thinking, “I’m not sure why God asked me to do that.”

That’s how it works. When you obey and avoid a disaster, you usually never even know what you avoided. You just obeyed and life kept going. And somewhere in heaven, your Father smiled because His kid trusted Him without needing an explanation.

What if the man had just stayed home from Wyoming? He’d have been sitting on his couch that weekend thinking, “I really wish I knew why God didn’t want me to go.” He would never have known about the truck. He’d just be alive.

That’s worth more than understanding.

You are not smart enough to outthink God. And that’s okay.

I’ve been in executive protection. I remember telling a man whose life was being threatened by a sniper, “From this point forward, you do everything I tell you without hesitation. If you have questions, I’ll answer them after the incident is over. During it, don’t ask me a single thing.”

Why? Because in the middle of a threat, you don’t stop to explain. You act. You move. You protect.

That’s exactly what the Lord is doing when He’s leading you. He’s not trying to confuse you. He’s not testing you. He’s seeing a threat you can’t see and He’s trying to move you out of the way. Your job is not to understand. Your job is to obey.

Can you look back at your life right now and think of times God tried to direct your steps and you argued with Him? Times He said buy and you didn’t? Times He said sell and you didn’t? Times He said go and you stayed — or stay and you went?

With that track record staring you in the face, why in the world are you still arguing with Him?

Trust Him. Move. Let Him explain later.

Your carnal mind is not your friend when it comes to hearing from God. It will demand explanations. It will manufacture doubts. It will disguise disobedience as wisdom.

Quit letting your reasoning override His leading. When you believe it’s Him — move. Even if you don’t understand it. Even if it doesn’t make sense. Even if no one applauds you for it.

Trust Overwatch. Follow the leading. Fight To Win.
