Stop Asking God for Signs — Start Hearing Him Spirit to Spirit

Have you been waiting on a sign that isn’t coming?

You’ve prayed something like, “Lord, if it’s You, send three red cars by” or “If it’s Your will, open the door and if it’s not, close it.” And you’re still standing there confused, no closer to an answer. Today I’m going to tell you something that might sting — but it’ll set you free if you’ll grab a hold of it.

You are a spirit. Stop trying to hear God through your suit.

Let me start with the foundation everything else rests on.

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV

You are three parts. You are a spirit. You have a soul. You live in a body.

The real you is your spirit. Your body is just an earth suit you walk around in. When you die, that suit goes in the ground but the real you is still alive — you’ll be in the presence of the Lord whether smoking or non-smoking.

Here’s the problem. If I hung my shirt on a hanger, would you walk over and try to have a conversation with my shirt? No. You’d talk to me, not to my clothes. But that’s exactly what we do when we keep asking God to speak to us through circumstances and signs. We’re saying, “Lord, talk to my suit. Don’t bother talking to the real me.”

He’s not interested in talking to your suit. He wants to talk to your spirit.

Being led by feelings is a sign of being carnal — not spiritual.

This is going to step on some toes. The more carnal you are, the more you want your leadings in the flesh.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Romans 8:14 NKJV

Carnal Christians say things like, “I just feel like the Lord is leading me away.” Or, “Every time I think about it, I just get afraid — I don’t think God wants me to do it.”

Stop. None of God’s leadings will violate the fruit of the Spirit. He’s not going to lead you through fear. He’s not going to lead you through dread. If your “leading” is just a feeling that lines up with what your flesh already wanted, that’s not the Spirit — that’s you.

I’m not telling you to ignore feelings. God gave them to you for a reason. But put a thermostat on them. When your feelings line up with the will of God, run with them. When your feelings contradict the will of God, turn that thermostat down and follow the Spirit instead.

Open doors and closed doors aren’t your spiritual GPS.

This one is going to make some folks uncomfortable, but it has to be said. Stop being led by open and closed doors.

Look at the apostle Paul. In Acts 14, he goes to the city of Lystra to preach. The crowd doesn’t just resist him — they pick up rocks and stone him to death. They literally drag his body out of the city.

I don’t know about you, but I’d consider that a pretty closed door.

So what does Paul do after the disciples gather around him and he comes back to life? He gets up, goes to the next city to minister, and then turns around and walks right back to the cities that just stoned him — including Lystra.

When he had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, he returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch.

Acts 14:21 NKJV

If Paul had been led by closed doors, he would have texted Barnabas: “I sense the leading of the Lord based on Jeff and Jimmy with the rocks. I think we’re supposed to go somewhere else.”

But Paul wasn’t led by rocks. He was led by the Spirit.

“I’m led to leave the church” is usually offense in disguise.

Here’s a brutal observation. Watch how often people are “led” to leave a church right after they get hurt, mad, or offended.

When they were happy with the pastor? They were led to be there. When the pastor said something they didn’t like? Suddenly they’re “led” to go. That’s not the Spirit of God. That’s offense wearing a spiritual mask.

The only reason to go to a church is because you’re led by the Spirit of God. The only reason to leave one is because you’re led by the Spirit of God. Not because of feelings. Not because somebody hurt you. Not because something didn’t go your way. Carnality dresses itself up in spiritual language all the time. Don’t fall for it.

Asking for signs was an Old Testament thing — and even Jesus called it out.

People love to bring up Gideon and his fleece. “Well, if Gideon could ask for a sign, why can’t I?”

Let me show you what Jesus said about that crowd.

An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

Matthew 12:39 NKJV

Wait — what changed between Gideon and Jesus? You did.

Gideon was spiritually dead on the inside. Like everyone in the Old Testament, his spirit man wasn’t alive yet. There was no Spirit-to-spirit communication available to him, so God worked with him on the outside — through fleeces and signs and wet ground.

But when Jesus rose, He made you alive. Read this slowly.

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.

Ephesians 2:4–5 NKJV

You’re not Gideon anymore. You don’t have a dead spirit needing external signs. You have a living spirit on the inside of you, and God Himself dwells there. Asking for outward signs now is going backward into the Old Testament when God has invited you into something far better.

That’s why Jesus said it’s an evil and adulterous generation that demands signs. He wasn’t being mean — He was warning believers not to settle for the lower form of communication when the higher one was available.

Quit grabbing the refrigerator while you’re waiting for the phone to ring.

If you keep looking for God to lead you through circumstances, signs, doors, and feelings, you’re going to keep missing Him. That’s like grabbing your refrigerator while waiting for your telephone to ring and wondering why nobody’s calling.

You’re looking in the wrong place.

The phone is on the inside of you. The Spirit of God is on the inside of you. The leading is happening Spirit to spirit, not skin to skin. Your job is to get quiet, get focused, and start listening to the part of you that’s actually wired to hear Him.

Quit asking Him to talk to your suit. Start letting Him talk to the real you.

Stop chasing signs. Hear Him Spirit to spirit. Fight To Win.
