The Inward Witness: The Most Sure Way God Leads You
What if the primary way God speaks to you isn’t loud, dramatic, or spectacular at all?
What if it’s so subtle you’ve been walking right past it? For four weeks we’ve been building toward this moment. We’ve laid the foundation. We’ve talked about wanting it, getting sensitive, shifting to neutral, operating in integrity, and judging everything by the Word. Now we’re getting to the way God leads you most — and it’s going to change everything if you’ll grab a hold of it.
Everything else can be faked. This one is different.
We’ve gone through the ways God speaks, from least common to most common. Audible voice. Angels. Visions and dreams. Through people. The inward voice. And the written Word of God.
Here’s the problem. The devil can replicate every single one of those — except the written Word, which is your measuring stick, and what I’m about to show you today.
An audible voice can be counterfeited. An angel of light can appear. Dreams can be manufactured. The inward voice can be imitated by the prince of the power of the air firing thoughts into your mind. Even Scripture can be twisted — the devil quoted it to Jesus in the wilderness.
So how do you know? How do you make decisions about things that aren’t specifically written in the Bible — like which house to buy, who to marry, whether to take a job, or when to go on television?
The inward witness.
The Spirit bears witness with your spirit.
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
Romans 8:15–16 NKJV
Think about what God chose to do here. The single most important thing you could ever know — that you are truly a child of God — He didn’t communicate through an audible voice. He didn’t write it in the sky. He didn’t send an angel.
He chose for His Spirit to bear witness with your spirit.
Why? Because this is the most reliable channel. This is Spirit-to-spirit communication — the real God talking to the real you. And if He trusted this method to deliver the most foundational truth of your entire existence, He can use it for everything else too.
If God can bear witness that you are His child, He can bear witness about business deals, friendships, direction, relationships, and every decision you’ll ever face. There’s no limit to what He can bear witness to.
The witness isn’t a feeling. It’s a knowing.
Let me explain it this way. My wife and I have been married for years. We live in the same house. We’re best friends. Because we spend so much time together, I can often tell when she doesn’t like something without her saying a single word.
The atmosphere shifts. Something on the inside of me senses it. She hasn’t spoken. She hasn’t made a face. But I just know.
That’s witness.
Well, Jesus lives in you. You live in the same “house.” You should be able to sense when something on the inside isn’t right — or when it is.
A lot of times when I say “God spoke to me,” I didn’t hear an inward voice. I didn’t have a vision. I just suddenly knew something. He bore witness to it. It landed on the inside of me with a certainty that didn’t come from my head.
This is different from an emotion. Emotions can be manipulated — we proved that with the Hollywood illustration. This isn’t your stomach fluttering or your heart racing. It’s a deep, settled knowing in your spirit that something is right or something is wrong.
The inward witness protected me when Scripture was being twisted.
Remember the story I told you about my first years in ministry? A well-known pastor was teaching me false doctrine by quoting the middle portions of verses and stringing them together. He was giving me Scripture, and I was accepting it because he had more experience than I did.
But something on the inside of me was unsettled. The inward witness was telling me, “This isn’t right.”
I didn’t know enough of the Word at that point to immediately identify the error. But the witness told me to go read the full passages. When I did, the context proved he was wrong.
The witness will always agree with the Word when it’s rightly divided. And when someone is twisting the Word — even quoting real verses — the witness will tell you, “That’s not Me.”
That’s the power of having these two working together. The Word is your measuring stick. The witness is your internal alarm system. You need both.
Luke wrote a book of the Bible because “it seemed good.”
Now here’s something that might surprise you.
If you were going to write a book that all of humanity would be judged by for eternity, how do you think God would get you to do it? You’d expect Him to catch you up to the third heaven, sit you down in a board meeting, and dictate every word audibly.
But that’s not what happened with Luke. Look at what he says:
It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account.
Luke 1:3 NKJV
It seemed good to me.
Luke wrote a book of the Bible — a book that still helps us evaluate life, doctrine, and truth today — because it seemed good to him. That is the Spirit bearing witness. That’s the inward witness in action.
Now, I know somebody is already thinking, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” I’m not talking about what seems right to the natural man. I’m talking about what seems right to the Spirit of God on the inside of a born-again believer who is walking in fellowship with Jesus.
The Spirit bore witness with Luke, and an entire book of the Bible came from it.
This is subtle — and that’s why most people miss it.
Here’s the challenge. The inward witness is not a brass band. It’s not a fireworks show. It’s not lightning and thunder. It’s quiet. It’s subtle. And it requires sensitivity.
That’s exactly why we spent a whole week talking about not being a mule, getting sensitive to God’s leading, and becoming the kind of son He can guide with the turn of His eye.
People want God to show up with signs and wonders because intimacy takes effort. They want the spectacular because the subtle requires a relationship. But the subtle is where the most reliable communication happens — Spirit to spirit, down in your heart where the devil can’t eavesdrop.
And remember what we said about the Spirit of adoption. God wants you comfortable. We adopted our daughter, and I always want her to know — she wasn’t taken because we had to take her. She was wanted. I want her comfortable in our house because it’s her home.
That’s how God feels about you. He put His Spirit inside you so you’d always know you belong. And that same Spirit will bear witness about every decision you’ll ever face — if you’ll get quiet enough to listen.
Get sensitive to the witness. Tomorrow we make decisions.
You’ve got the foundation. You’ve got the Word as your measuring stick. Now you’ve got the inward witness as your most reliable guide for the specific decisions of your life.
Tomorrow I’m going to show you exactly how to put this into practice — how I actually make decisions using the inward witness in real time. You don’t want to miss it.
Trust the witness. Follow the Spirit. Fight To Win.
