Two Houses - Why the Same Storm Leaves One Life Standing and the Other Gone
I'm excited to keep going in this series, because today I want to show you a story Jesus told that answers one of the hardest questions people ask: why do two people who love God end up with such different outcomes?
Two Men, Same Church, Same Sermon, Same Opportunity
Picture two men sitting in the same service, hearing the exact same teaching on how to build a house that can't be shaken. Both of them walk out the door with equal opportunity to put it into practice.
“Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.”
Luke 6:47-48 (NKJV)
One man heard it and thought, "That's exactly what I need to do." The other heard the same words and decided it wasn't worth the effort.
Digging to the Rock Costs You Time - Building on Sand Looks the Same, Until the Storm Comes
Digging down to bedrock takes longer than just throwing dirt in a pile and calling it a foundation. The man doing it the hard way had to put up with the other guy looking over and saying, "You're overdoing this. It doesn't take all that."
And for a while, it looked like he had a point. Once both houses were finished, they looked equal. Same amount of time on the calendar, two completed houses, two lives that appeared identical on the surface.
The Storm Isn't the Issue - What You Built On Is
Then the storm came, and the difference nobody could see before became impossible to miss. One house stood, because it was founded on the rock. The other collapsed completely, because it never had a foundation to begin with.
Notice what actually caused the difference — not the size of the storm, but what each man had built on. The storm is never actually the deciding factor in your life. What you built on before the storm ever arrived is.
God Isn't Picking Winners and Losers - He's the One Who Taught You How to Win
Jesus taught both men the exact same thing. He didn't want either man's house destroyed — that's precisely why He explained, in detail, how to build one that would stand. If the outcome depended on God's arbitrary will, there'd be no reason for Him to teach the lesson at all.
This goes all the way back to Adam and Eve. God told them plainly what would kill them and what wouldn't. The instruction was there. What happened next depended on what they did with it.
So when a life gets shaken apart, the honest question isn't "why did God let this happen to me?" It's "did I dig down to the rock, or did I settle for a pile of dirt because it was faster?" God already told you how to build something the storm can't take. Your part now is doing what He said.
Fight To Win.
