If you want to hear from the Lord, you have to pay attention to Him. Think about it. If you’re in the same room as the person with whom you’re conversing, you can hear the words the person is saying, but you can also pick up on the other subtle indications of his or her feelings. If that person leaves the room, it becomes much harder to figure out what is being said.

If you want to hear from the Holy Spirit, the first thing you have to do is pay attention to Him. You have to be looking at Him. Remember, you are a spirit, and the Spirit desires to bear witness with your spirit.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:14-17

Now, the Spirit of adoption is the Spirit of God, and what He says is that He wants you to be at peace. He doesn’t want you to be afraid or in bondage, which is exactly what fear brings. God isn’t going to ask you to do something that would put you into bondage — but sometimes, you might be afraid of something that God prompts you to do. It’s still God ask you to do it, but you’re not responding correctly.

When God speaks to through his Spirit, He is choosing to use the one way to communicate that, unlike other forms of communication, can’t be imitated. It’s an intimate, subtle choice that we might miss if we’re not paying attention or don’t know what to look for. He has shown us, though, what we can watch for to see if His Spirit is bearing witness to our spirit.

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

The Amplified Bible Classic Edition rephrases this verse.

“And let the peace (soul harmony which comes from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds…” Colossians 3;15 AMPC

Let this peace the umpire. Peace will rule in your heart. It will tell if you’re going to the right or wrong direction. When peace isn’t in agreement, you don’t take that action, but when peace is in agreement, you do it. Let peace rule, because that’s the subtle indicator that lets you know that the Spirit is bearing witness with your spirit.
