In Romans 8:15-16, Paul shows us how significant the Spirit of adoption truly is in our lives.
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
Not everyone has the kind of intimate relationship with their earthly father that lets them call their father daddy. Paul is telling the Romans — and us — that it’s that precise relationship that God wants with us. We belong to Him. He loves us. We should be comfortable in His presence — and we can be in His presence. Paul writes in Hebrews 4:16 that we can boldly approach the throne of grace to receive God’s mercy and find mercy to help us in a time of need.
The Spirit of adoption says that we are welcomed into His family. We might have heard from our biological parents that we were mistakes, but you can’t accidentally adopt someone. God said, “I want you to have my name. I want you to be in my house, to be at my table and to call upon me because I want you. You’re so accepted into this family that you can call me daddy.”
That welcoming feeling we get is His Spirit bearing witness to our spirit and is how you recognize whether the Spirit is truly bearing witness to your spirit. It will be a welcoming feeling.
Remember, your head might not like it. Your head might give you all kinds of reasons why you shouldn’t be listening to the Spirit. But your spirit will immediately recognize and will to do His will.
If you’re not sure if God is talking to you, you can be sure through the Spirit bearing witness. Every other way can be imitated or twisted. Hearing God’s audible voice can be faked. The devil can twist the Word of God. The devil can appear as an angel of light. Prophets can do strange things.
But no one can fake the witness of the Spirit. God chose this method to talk to us because it’s the most intimate. This is the most important thing God wants you to understand – that He is in love with you and you are His child. He could have had an audible voice come from heaven telling you that you were born again. He could have had a prophet or an angel walk by. He could have written it in the sky with hearts.
He chose this intimate, unmistakable, unable to be counterfeited way to relate to you so that would always and forever have the assurance that you are a child of God.
