You Can Hear From God — And You’re Supposed To
Let me ask you something straight up. When you’ve got a big decision in front of you, do you actually know what God wants you to do?
Or do you just guess, pray a little, and hope you picked right? If that’s been your life, I’ve got news for you: God never designed you to live that way. You were invited into a relationship where you can hear from Him about anything — and today I want to put that tool in your hands.
The Bible doesn’t cover every single thing in your life.
Some people will tell you, “Just read the Word and you’ll hear from God.” I agree. The Word is absolutely final authority. But be honest with me for a second — there’s a lot in life the written Word doesn’t specifically address.
I’ve been married to my wife Terry for 14 years. But before we got married, I promise you there wasn’t a verse in the Bible that said, “When the fullness of days has come, Kurt shall take unto himself a wife, and her name shall be Terry.” That direction wasn’t in the book. That came from personal leading.
Same with your job. Your ministry. Where to live. Who to marry. Which decision to say yes to and which to say no to. God wants to speak to you about all of it — and He wants you to hear Him accurately.
You were invited into a relationship, not a religion.
Here’s one of the biggest reasons people don’t hear from God. Salvation has been presented to most of us as the end of the journey instead of the beginning of one.
And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
John 17:3 NKJV
Catch that? Eternal life isn’t just living forever — everybody lives forever somewhere. Eternal life is knowing Him. That’s the entire point.
Let me put it this way. When I walked up to the altar to marry Terry, I said “I do.” But that wasn’t the last time I ever spoke to her. That wasn’t the goal. The goal was that from that point forward, we’d know each other, share our hopes and dreams, and live in relationship.
But a lot of people treated salvation like that altar moment was the finish line. “I’m saved. I’m not going to hell. We’re done.” No, darlin’, you just got started.
Christianity isn’t a religion. It’s a relationship. And if the whole point of eternal life is that you know Him, do you really think He went quiet after salvation?
If you don’t believe He’s speaking, you won’t listen.
Let me tell you something funny about me and the refrigerator. My wife will come home from the grocery store, stock the fridge, and an hour later I’ll open it, stare right at the food, shut the door, and call her saying there’s nothing in there.
Why? Because I didn’t believe there was anything to look for, so I didn’t actually look.
Same thing happens in the spirit. If somebody told you a long time ago, “You can’t really know God’s will,” or “God doesn’t speak to people like that anymore,” then you won’t bother looking for His voice. You’ll stare right at what God is saying and completely miss it because you already decided it wasn’t there.
I remember a young man asking me one time, “Do you really think you can know God’s will?” I told him, “Not only do I think you can — I think you’re supposed to.”
Mature sons are led by the Spirit. You can be one of them.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 8:14 NKJV
Notice the phrase “as many as.” That phrase means not everyone will be. The Amplified Bible says it this way — “as many who allow themselves to be led by the Spirit of God.”
Being led by the Spirit doesn’t happen by accident. Nobody stumbles into hearing from God. You have to want it. You have to purpose in your heart to be led.
And listen — the word sons in that verse isn’t talking about being born into God’s family. It’s talking about character. It means you’ve matured to the place where you look like your Daddy. You sound like Him. You act like Him. People look at you and say, “That one belongs to God. You can tell by how he lives.”
You get there by being led by the Spirit.
Some people won’t be led — will you?
Here’s the deciding moment. God’s not withholding His leading from anyone. He’s speaking. But if you don’t make up your mind to be led, you won’t be.
So right now, will you settle it? Will you say in your heart, “I’m going to be one of the many. Whatever group doesn’t get led by the Spirit of God — I’m not in that one. I’m going to be led.”
Because if you won’t decide, the flesh will decide for you. The flesh is easier. You’re used to it. It’s automatic. Being led by the Spirit is going to take some effort — and before you push back with “I’m not into works,” let me stop you.
I’m not talking about earning God’s love. He already loves you. I’m not talking about getting Him to bless you. You’re already blessed. I’m talking about the same kind of effort I put in to get to know my wife after we got married. We were already married — but if I didn’t make an effort to know her, I wouldn’t.
Paul said it plainly:
That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings...
Philippians 3:10 NKJV
That’s after he was saved. He made it his determined purpose to know Jesus. That’s what I’m asking you to do.
Start your journey today.
Today isn’t the day you get everything figured out. Today is the day you decide you’re going to hear from God — that you’re going to mature — that you’re going to be one of the sons who look like their Daddy.
Every decision you’ve been wrestling with? There’s Someone in the room with you who knows exactly what to do, loves you completely, and wants to tell you. But you’ve got to believe He’s speaking before you’ll ever start listening.
Make up your mind today. You can hear from God. You’re supposed to. Fight To Win.
