You Won't Get a Million Acres From One Seed — But You Will Get There

I'm excited to keep going in this series, because today I want to correct a mistake I've watched a lot of well-meaning people make: confusing faith with fantasy.

Your future is decided by the seed you're sowing today. And the seed you should be sowing is the Word of God.

One apple seed won't give you a million acres — but it will put you on the path

I will not get a million acres of apples off one apple seed. But a million acres of apples is inside that one seed.

Plant it, and you get a tree. Eat some of the fruit, but save the seeds out of the rest of the apples, and plant those too. Keep doing that — plant, harvest, plant again — and eventually, yes, one seed really can become a million acres. But it takes diligence and consistency, not a single leap.

Two people can start with the identical seed. One quits after the first tree because he wanted a million acres immediately. The other just keeps planting and harvesting.

Years later, the one who stayed consistent ends up with everything the other one gave up on.

Start where you actually are, not where you wish you were

If you don't have shoes, don't believe God for a McLaren. Believe for a pair of shoes. Then a bicycle. Then a used car. Work your way up.

That's not lack of faith — that's how seedtime and harvest actually operates. People get disgruntled and say, "I believed for a million dollars and I don't have a dime, this doesn't work." It does work. It just doesn't work the way fantasy works.

Healing works a little differently than finances

Healing is already an established, purchased fact. In some ways it's easier to lay hold of than finances, because it doesn't depend on anyone else cooperating with you — it's just a matter of you getting a hold of it.

And once you get free of pain, don't stop there. Keep sowing until every part of your body lines up with the Word. First the blade, then the ear, then the full harvest.

The boulder I didn't want God to touch

“These are likewise the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word's sake, immediately they stumble.”

Mark 4:16-17 (NKJV)

When I first got saved, I read that I was supposed to bless those who curse me, do good to those who hate me, pray for those who spitefully use me. I decided right then: I'm not doing that. I'd spent my whole life making sure nobody got over on me, and I wasn't about to become a pushover.

I had a boulder in my ground, and I didn't want the Word anywhere near it.

What I didn't understand was that God wasn't asking me to be a doormat. He was telling me He would be my rear guard — that no weapon formed against me would prosper. I couldn't see any of that yet.

So He met me where I actually was. He didn't ask me to bless my enemies overnight. He just asked, "Could you at least quit hitting people when you're mad?" And I said yes to that much.

Thirty years later, I bless those who curse me. I do good to those who hate me. Not because I arrived there on my own, but because I let that Word keep working on the stone instead of holding on to it.

Rooting takes time — so start now

Things that take root take time and watering. Know that going in, so you're not surprised when it doesn't happen overnight.

Make up your mind: I'm going to get rooted in this. If the Word touches something you're not ready to let go of yet, at least let Him start chipping away at it. Act on it even when the gladness has left and you don't feel like it — that's exactly how it takes root.
